Trying Something New

2:54 pm • Filed under: Uncategorized

So…I’m working on a novella that is more sensual than anything (though it’s still pretty hot - heh heh heh). A little more descriptive, mysterious setting, recluse hero. Yeah, it’s totally different than anything I’ve ever written.

No funny bits whatsoever. I’ve written a few that are going to be published that aren’t funny (Spontaneous at Samhain, Covet at Amber Quill) but this one is my darkest yet. The hero is tormented, the heroine is a spoiled brat. He’ll make her appreciate the small things in life and she’ll bring him out of his self-imposed prison.

Wow, sounds pretty intense huh? Now I just gotta finish the thing! I gave up on it a few weeks ago, worked on a revision and some other stuff but last night I started to have at it again. We’ll see how it works out.

I’m wondering if any of you are stretching your wings and trying something new this year? I feel doing this pushes me as a writer, which is a good thing.

Karen I am….paranormal and/or/um urban fantasy. I guess we’ll see and good luck!

  2. Stacy Dawn says:

Yeah, I’m headed to a darker spot this year too. Just for a little spreading of my wings LOL

  3. Samantha Lucas says:

That is so cool! Good for you Karen. My last release at CP did that for me. I did a menage which was new and I stretched my own ideas about the traditional romance and I am really proud of that book.

Sounds great Karen! Dark’s great too.

The spreading-wings-thing has got to be catching. I wrote my first ever SciFi this year. I love to challenge myself as far as genre is concerned.

Stay with this story, it sounds very interesting.

Yep, 2007 is the year of the wing-stretching. For the past 5 years, I’ve written mystery short stories. Late last year, I decided on romance. . . I’ve written longer (up to 30K) than ever before and different in genre, although there’s still a paranormal element in almost everything I write.

  6. Melissa Marsh says:

Yes I am. My next three planned novels are all very different - and one is particular will be something I’ve never attempted before. I think we need to try different things to stretch ourselves as writers - that’s how we grow!

  7. Emma Sinclair says:

    I stretched last year, lol.

So far, t his year, I’ve been going back to the lighter just plain old contemporary stuff that I like best.

  8. Robin L. Rotham says:

Doing a short story was a major departure for me. Now I’m desperate to do anything except work on my sequel.

  9. Jill Monroe says:

Good for you on the stretching.

  10. Isabella Snow says:

My short story was something new, I guess. I dont really like writing them, I find it really difficult to keep it short. But I did it, so I guess that’s something!
