Well, besides the fact that I’m all over the place reading all kinds of stuff, the main thing I’m reading right now is How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author by Janet Evanovich.
Okay, I gotta admit that when I heard this was coming out I was like, “nah.” I’ve read a lot of craft books this last year - I think you can get a little crafted out.
I’m browsing the book section at Target this past Saturday and there it was, Janet smiling at me, looking very pleasant. Nice big 20% sticker smacked right next to her face. So I thought, “Oh why not?” and tossed it into my cart.
What a fast-paced, easy read! Done mostly in question and answer form, I think she gives some great tips on how to write. And she explains it in basic language, which I appreciate. Ina Yalof gives some practical tips in there as well.
Now here’s the really super duper smart thing Janet did in this book - all of her examples are from the Stephanie Plum series. And all I gotta say is this:
WHY HAVEN’T I BEEN READING THIS SERIES? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME?
Okay. Next time I go to Target I’m snapping ‘em up cos I know they have practically the entire series all lined up at that store, I’ve seen it.
Janet, you’re brilliant. I can’t wait to gobble up these books. Sheesh, there goes my bank account.

Kelley says:
Sounds great. I’ve never read any of her books. Is it romance?
Shelli Stevens says:
I’ve never read her, though heard that her books are fabulous. My mom loves her. That writing book sounds good
Faith says:
Oh, you’re gonna hate me, but I never could get into anything Evanovich has written.
Stacy Dawn says:
I never knew she did a how to book!
I loved her Stephanie Plum series!
I see faith couldn’t get into them but that’s like me and Nora Roberts or Anne Rice…everyone hoots over them and I can’t get past page 5.
Everyone has differents taste and in truth, I couldn’t get into J. E’s Full Tilt series but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Stephanie Plum
Tara M. Leigh says:
Ohhhhhh…I used to work at an audiobook place, her Stephanie Plum series was one of our bestsellers! I have never come across anyone who had a bad thing to say about Janet E. Hmmm…maybe I should pick up the books too!LOL
With Love,
Tara M.
Cathy says:
I love this series. Once you get started, it is hard not to keep up with it. She creates a zany world with some laugh out loud moments from Stephanie’s life as a bail enforcer and all her family and friends.
Tempest Knight says:
I’ve heard of her but I’ve never gotten around her books. Maybe when I tired of my paranormal binge, I might pick up one of her books.
Julie S says:
I read the first Stephanie Plum book and it was AMAZING! I can’t wait to read the rest, but I need to get through my TBR pile first.
I was thinking about buying that Janet E book; it looked interesting.
Emma Sinclair says:
I think I read the first one, or at least part of it.
I’ve been thinking about getting the How I Write book, but haven’t decided yet. I don’t know if you made my decision easier or harder.
I don’t really love series books, I don’t know why. Trilogies are ok, but any more than that just don’t do it for me. I’ve never gotten into the JD Robb series either.
Melissa Marsh says:
I tried reading the first Stephanie Plum book and couldn’t get into it, either. I may have to try again, though.
M.E Ellis says:
I’ve got all the Stephanie Plums, bought them a few months back to get into some light reading. I read to page four of one and haven’t picked them up since. I think thriller/horror really is my fave thing, not light hearted. My daughter laughed her head off at them, though.
:o)
April says:
I haven’t read the series yet, mostly because I fear that after I start I’ll want to keep going and not getting any writing done :-).
Jazz says:
They are pretty good. I’ve read only 3 so far. But I have the rest waiting for me.
Annalee Blysse says:
I enjoyed her stories… I just made order at Amazon, might have added this! LOL.
