Revealed

2:12 pm • Filed under: Uncategorized

I’ve been coming out of the closet.

The writing closet, that is. I figured since I just sold something, I need to start telling people so I can generate some buzz and get people to buy the dang thing.

I’ve been keeping my writing a secret. You tell people this stuff and then they constantly ask you about it. And when you have nothing to report, well, then it starts being difficult to deal with. Like you don’t want to deal with their questions at all. So I just wouldn’t tell anyone except for those closest to me.

So I’ve started telling people. Friends, family members. I never expected my first sale to be an erotic/romantic story, and that’s been kind of tough to explain to people, to say the least. But most everyone has been really supportive, which is nice. I’ve had a few friends who were shocked, not real excited/supportive but that’s okay. I kind of expected that.

Have any of you who are not published (yet - that’s my positive vibe going on!) revealed your secret writing passion? Or even those who ARE published - are some of you still keeping it a secret? Share your experiences…

When it comes up that I’m a writer they are all aglow like it is some facinating thing (which of course to me it is) and with a few short stories published it keeps the conversation going a bit but the starry eyed hey-I-know-a-bestseller look wans when they realize I have yet to sell anything major.

My dh has told more people than me. Only those closest to me know…
Once I’ve got something hard-copy in my hands (or I guess e-copy!), then I would feel validated enough to spread the word!

Besides my husband, only four people know. My mother, because she manipulated me. My sister, because I was desperate to bond with her and find common ground (she writes too). And most recently, my dad and stepmom, because I was afraid they were starting to think I’ve become a hermit.

Wow, it’s really starting to add up, isn’t it?

Good question. At the moment only my children and dh know because they live with me, and my mum has known for so long that she’s probably given up waiting for me to complete a full manuscript, lol!

Before I was pubbed most people kinda said ‘whatever’ and a few were die hard supporters. Then I got published and it stayed about exactly the same. LOL. Get out of that closet and DECLARE yourself!

I told people “Please buy my book! Even if you don’t read erotica. Buy it and send it to the recycle bin, and know you supported me”

So far it’s worked. I doubt they’ll buy the second one though, lol.

Hubby knows, my mother and sister know, and a small group of my friends know. And they ask about it. But it’s funny because they whisper their questions when we’re out so that my secret doesn’t go public.

I think that if I sold, I’d scream loud enough that everyone knew though :-).

Some people know I’m writing, other don’t. It depends on whether it comes up in conversation or not. It isn’t something I hide, but neither is it something I shout about. I suppose I treat it like any other aspect of life. It’s there, that’s it.
