My Fellow Duranies…

10:57 am • Filed under: Uncategorized

All the talk of Duran Duran has made me nostalgic. I loved those dudes! I was gonna marry Roger Taylor (the drummer). I even wrote about it in one of my early, wonderful, lovely novels (changed my name to something more exotic, though). Wrote those “novels” in school notebooks, and in the 9th grade it literally got passed around the whole school. I had people I didn’t even know (female Duran fans of course) coming up to me and telling me how good it was. HAH! Those things were total crap.

The title of said novel (spread out in multiple notebooks - I didn’t know how to make a story end back then cos I didn’t want to!)? Um, it was: ? Otherwise known as Question Mark. Which goes to show I wasn’t any good at titles then, and I’m not much better now!

Anyway, I bought all the magazines, albums (vinyl back then baby, and including the special imported remixes), books - everything. Even went and saw them live in Feb. of 84, Power Station in July of 85 (with John and Andy Taylor), and Duran Duran again in summer of 93. I wanted to see them last year but the seats sucked and the tickets were like $70! My friend and I (she’s a former Duranie too - she wanted to marry Nick Rhodes - I think she liked his makeup) decided against it. We were fans but not that big of fans ~ anymore.

Wanna hear something weird? First marriage was to a drummer. Second marriage, my husband shares a birthday with . . . Roger Taylor! I AM not KIDDING! So I think I was always searching for Roger, I just didn’t know it.

By the way, I have a lot of their music on my iPod, and I’m not ashamed to say it.

Here’s a new pic of them by the way. John looks bad! Everybody else looks ok . . .

OH! I loved them in school. I have a best of CD that I listen to all the time. I still like the classics best…Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, Wild Boys!

  2. Stacy Dawn says:

    OMG I’m old.

  3. Julie S says:

OMG. 1984. I was in fourth grade and SO inappropriately in love with the D2 guys, in particular Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, as well as the lead singer from the Thompson Twins. If my mother only knew… Karen, You’re so lucky I got to see them!

And, weird thing about my John Taylor crush. One of my high school boyfriends was Jay Taylor. And my husband is a bass player. Hmmm…

  4. Julie S says:

LOL - I meant to say “Karen, you’re so lucky YOU got to see them!”

I only wish “I” got to see them!

  5. Karen Erickson says:

So see Julie you found your own John Taylor, just like I found my Roger…freaky stuff.

You don’t know how lucky I felt when I got to see them in 84. I was about to turn 14 and my mom got me the tickets to see them in Reno, which was like a 3 hour drive. What a great mom! One of my favorite birthday presents!

  6. Sue aka MsCreativity says:

It feels weird because my 17yr old daughter raves on about Duran Duran too!
Julie, I also remember the Thompson Twins:-) Music just doesn’t seem the same nowadays, does it? [sigh]:-)

  7. Faith says:

Last concert I went to was ZZ Top at the Wheeling Civic Center when I was 16.

I have Duran Duran’s Greatest Hits CD. It’s one of my faves.

I am so bad with matching songs with artists - I remember DD as a big name, and I’m sure I know their songs…love 80’s music, just never been all that big into buying music…

The big thing when I was in junior high - New Kids on the Block. Bleh. They were terrible - I was just into them because my friends were…

  9. Shelli Stevens says:

I was such a Duran Duran fan! I loved all their stuff, but never made a concert. You look way too young to have been at those concerts, lol!

Yes, the Wiggles (going back to what you wrote on my blog!) kind of have this bizarre sex appeal. Somewhat. Or I’m in total mommy mode. My daughter’s 2, so I think I have another year of Wiggles hypnotics.

Good luck with your Hawaii book!

  10. Karen Erickson says:

Hah! Shelli made my day saying I look too young to go to a DD concert. Psst - I’m 36. Yikes!

    But I don’t feel 36. I still feel like a kid!

  11. Sarah L. Castleberry says:

Shelli - too funny about the Wiggles! I went through that too, but fortunately, my girls have moved on from the Wiggles into Princesses.

For a while I had a story idea where the heroine was a wild child, and the hero volunteered as a Wiggles-type TV personality - way too goodie-goodie for her…

Once I really thought about it, it was too cheesy! lol
