When you write, do you need peace and quiet or do you like to listen to music? I’m on both sides of the fence. Sometimes, I need quiet, sometimes I don’t have that option and I write amongst cartoons blaring and children running around like banshees.
Other times, I get in these weird creative moods where I need music. And then something strange happens and the lyrics start talking to me. And I listen to the same damn song over and over and over again. It’s embarrassing cos your iPod tells you how many times you listen to a song - yes, it keeps count. And when you realize you’ve listened to a specific song over 50 times, you kinda feel like a fool. But the song is talking to me. I can’t help it.
Here’s an excerpt from Jane’s Addiction’s song “Jane Says.” My heroine just happens to be named Janie - and this part right here is her. The song inspired me before I actually came up with the character:
Jane says I’ve never been in love
I don’t know what it is
She only knows if someone wants her
I want them if they want me
I only know they want me
She gets mad And she starts to cry
She takes a swing man
She cant hit!
She don’t mean no harm
She just dont know
What else to do about it
Poor Janie. She’s a mess.
On a side note, if Julie S is not going to write the rock star flashing in the window story, I’m thinking I’m gonna do it. And I’m going to model my hero after Dave Navarro from — Jane’s Addiction! You know, the freaky dude who’s married to Carmen Electra? Well, I watched that show on MTV that followed their wedding, and he was so sweet and so into her. Soft spoken, intelligent. And he looks like some freaky crazy rocker dude, but take away the black nail polish, the excessive tatoos and the black eyeliner and he’s pretty good looking. Well, maybe keep the black eyeliner cos he looks good with sultry eyes.
Uh, I can’t believe I just said that.

Julie S says:
DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!!!
Would your heroine be modeled after Carmel Electra?
This is going to be the greatest story. I’m so glad I’m a nosy neighbor. Btw, it’s Friday night. SHOWER NIGHT. I’ll be sure to spy for you.
Karen Erickson says:
So this makes me wonder, does this dude only shower on Friday? He needs to up his shower habits. Not so you can become even more of a peeping tom, but so he can be cleaner! LOL
And I wouldn’t model the heroine after Carmen, she’s too hot. She’d need to be a quieter girl that he brings out of her shell. In a BIG way. Heh heh heh
Julie S says:
LOL - I think he showers on other nights, but the first time I saw him was a Friday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s a Friday night ritual (how sad - he’s showering at 9:30 Friday night to go out partying, while I’m home alone cleaning or writing or spying. Pathetic.)
Stacy Dawn says:
I am either dense or missing something but did you change your title on the side…I absolutely LOVE it!
As for Dave Navarro, I watched him on Rockstar INXS and though he is so not my type there is just something about him that mesmerized me too. I can see how he would be good inspiration for that hero.
Oh oh oh…I just realized, it’s Friday night Julie!
Karen Erickson says:
Are you talking about The Bride Who Loved Me? Nope, I’ve had that title up for weeks. And I think it’s going to stay cos I can’t come up with anything better.
It fits the wip PERFECTLY.
April says:
I completely agree on the Dave Navarro issue. Not my type, but I got roped in watching rockstar inxs. Sounds like a great idea!
I like to listen to music while I write too. And that stupid little counter is a real pain. So what if I listened to a song 48 times in a row? Maybe I like Duran Duran sometimes… :-)
Karen Erickson says:
April, how’d you know I’m a closet Duranie???? Many of my earlier works were written about the wives of Duran Duran I kid you not (of course, they were all based on my friends who loved their fellow DD men - luckily enough we all liked a different one)!
And I still have those wonderful works of art too. Man they are BAD!
Shelli Stevens says:
I’m like you, can do it with or without music. It just depends on my mood. I love Duran Duran. Hee hee. Sorry, picked up on some of those other comments!
Sue aka MsCreativity says:
OMG! That’s a blast from the past - Duran Duran! Do you remember the head scarves they used to tie around their heads in their early days (or am I showing my age here?!)I could never decide who was my favourite: Simon Le Bon or John Taylor!
In answer to your question Karen, I too can write with or without noise. Which is just as well, or I’d never get anything done. :-)
