I’m Back

11:47 am • Filed under: Uncategorized

So…vacationing with two small children is not much fun. Actually, my daughter, whose 3, was fine. She was so glad to be spending time with her grandma, loved holding her new cousin, generally had a great time. My 12 year old got a little bored, but had a great time with his uncle (his idol) and got some new stuff. My 18 month old - did NOT have a good time. At all. Missed his routine, his house, his naps, his bed. Very, very difficult. You should have seen the smile on his face when we came home! He smiled all night long. Poor guy. Change is hard.

I haven’t written a word in - ssh, don’t tell - five days!!! Oh my gosh!!!! I really need to get cracking. I brought my laptop but never cracked it open. Just never got around to it. So this week, I need to write. A lot. I’ve missed my characters. They’ve been talking to me the last couple of days, asking me when am I going to get back at it. I told them to hold their horses, give me some time. But they’re getting really impatient. They remind me of my children.

So have any of you paused on the writing ‘cos of life and then felt guilty? Had your characters talking to you, making you feel even more guilty? I’m pretty sure you all have…

Welcome back! And don’t worry, breaks are good. Your writing will be refreshed.

I will be taking a break myself next week - my in-laws are coming to town so I don’t think I’ll have the time or the inclination to write.

I think it will be good though. After being so disciplined these last few days, I’m bascially writing jibberish.

Good that you are all back safe and sound. Yes, little ones just don’t understand change well at all…heck neither do older ones sometimes LOL.

Always. I could have everything ready one day but the little guy will decide that nap time isn’t what he wants and I’ll be lucky to get a word down. With Easter weekend coming up I probably won’t get as much done with visiting relatives either.

I take a one week break after each novel - but I usually wind up writing something in the interim. Shorts or articles or something. Anything. It’s been 2 weeks now, so time to get cracking on those revisions the agent sent my way.

Sorry about traveling with an 18-month-old. Egad. My boys HATE to not sleep in their beds. We have to exhaust them, and pray they’ll pass out. Laying them down to sleep does not work away from home.

Know exactly what you mean about travelling with babies - when the twins were that age we just didn’t go anywhere. (still hardly do for that matter!)

on life interrupting writing….all I can say is wouldn’t it be nice to be at one of those writer’s retreats (there’s one I know of in Australia called Verona)where they take care of everything for you (meals, washing etc) so that you can sit all day and just write, write, write. Interrupted only by occassional, refreshing bushwalks - and drinks in the lounge at night with the other writers.
