I know, I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’ve done it. I’ve wrote too much.
I went on a bender yesterday. Just wrote like a fool. Wanted to push over the 30,000 mark so I could think “I’m half way done.” And I did it. I not only pushed past 30,000, I made it all the way to 32 plus. I should be thrilled, especially because I’m going out of town for the weekend and won’t get a chance to write at all.
And yeah, I’m thrilled, but I’m also tired. At one in the morning I had two kids sitting on my bed, wide awake. One of them crying for Daddy (he’s out of town for work) and one just happy to be bouncing on my bed. I wasn’t too thrilled about all of this.
Besides, my carpal tunnel is hurtin’ like nobody’s business. All those years of working in a office, typing away like a mad woman did damage to my wrists, and right now they’re killing me. Ibuprofin has become my best friend. No fun.
So I’m thinking maybe this little vacation to go visit family and finally meet my new niece is necessary. I need to relax and more than anything, I need to rest my wrists. Especially my left one (I’m a lefty) - it hurts!
Ok, enough of my whining. Anybody else get aches and pains when they write? All hunched over your desk, laptop, whatever? I can imagine all the ailments. Fill me in on yours! Let’s moan and complain together.

Julie S says:
Congrats on exceeding your goal!
I’m in pain. I think my chair is at the wrong height or something, because lately I’ve been getting a cramp in the back of my neck. Maybe I’m just getting old?
My RWA chapter is trying to get someone in to speak about office ergonomics. I think that will be very useful.
I was up pretty late last night too. Didn’t get any reading done, just writing. I wanted to keep going, but my eyes started burning and the room started spinning.
I hope you have a great vacation!
Julie Cohen says:
I sit in my chair cross-legged and after a good writing session I can barely walk. Plus my back gets very sore. I think I need to go to the gym some more and work on my back muscles.
It is really not a healthy profession. I force myself to get up and stretch and dance around the house or whatever every so often. Sorry to hear about your carpal tunnel.
Julie Cohen says:
Oh and good for you for writing so much!
Becky says:
Wow!
32,ooo words. Congratulations!
Have you or are you going to
submit the first three chapters? - or are you waiting until you finish the entire book?
On aches and pains - yeah, like Julie, I get a sore neck - which sometimes leads to a tension headache.
And if I write just before I go to bed I can’t get to sleep - can’t switch my mind off or something - and end up having wierd, plot- related dreams.
This is definitely an unhealthy occupation.

JENNA says:
I write cross legged too, so I have to do these weird hip stretches that always make my husband say ‘that has to hurt.’ And I sit on my bed, with the laptop balanced on my knees. Nothing ergonomic about that.
I write at night trying to get plot related dreams
Sarah L. Castleberry says:
I sit in an office chair all day at work staring at a computer. Then, when I write, I’m sitting in a chair staring at a computer.
The back can definitely get cramped. I try to walk at lunch at work and can tell such a difference when I move around for 30 minutes.
We all jumped in here to complain, didn’t we??
Stacy Dawn says:
Yeah, my chair at my worktable isn’t that great. I get the discomfort in my shoulders and worse today because I must have slept on one wrong and it is just a streak of pain today. Unusual for it to get that bad.
(((hugs))) to all of us!
